Raymond Stuwe is a German contemporary portrait artist based on La Gomera in the Canary Islands, Spain. Known for his distinctive approach to acrylic pouring, he creates expressive, large-scale portraits of iconic personalities through a process that combines fluid movement with extraordinary precision.

His journey into art began unexpectedly.

In 2016, after years in the demanding world of professional poker, a period of burnout forced him to reconsider the direction of his life. What followed was neither a carefully planned career change nor a traditional artistic education.

It was a discovery.

In late 2017, Stuwe discovered acrylic pouring, a technique built around the unpredictable movement of liquid paint. Fascinated by its possibilities, he began years of experimentation with colors, materials and surfaces.

His early explorations included metallic effects, glitter and epoxy resin. Yet he gradually abandoned anything that concealed the authentic character of the paint itself.

He wanted the process to remain visible.

What began as experimentation evolved into a highly individual artistic language.

Painting Without Brushes

No brushes. No corrections.

These words define both Stuwe’s technique and his artistic philosophy.

Working with fluid acrylic paints, he constructs his portraits through successive layers of carefully controlled colour. Each layer introduces new depth, contrast and emotional intensity.

The process demands patience, concentration and an intuitive understanding of how liquid paint behaves.

There is no traditional brushwork. No conventional blending. And once the paint begins to flow, there is no simple way to undo what has happened.

Every decision matters.

The tension between control and unpredictability lies at the heart of his work. From a distance, the portraits reveal familiar faces and striking expressions. Up close, they expose intricate networks of flowing colour, delicate transitions and the unmistakable evidence of their creation.

Fluid chaos becomes figurative precision.

Beyond the Portrait

For Stuwe, a portrait is more than a representation of a recognizable face.

His subjects include cultural icons, musicians, actors and influential personalities whose lives have shaped generations. Through colour, contrast and composition, he explores identity, individuality, vulnerability and the emotional power of human expression.

His portraits often combine dramatic dark backgrounds with luminous layers of colour, allowing the subject to emerge with an almost sculptural presence.

Each work is created as an individual statement, balancing visual intensity with a contemporary aesthetic.

International Recognition

Stuwe’s work has been presented internationally, including exhibitions at Gallery Wolfsen in Denmark and the Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

A significant milestone came in August 2026, when his portrait of David Bowie achieved more than €30,000 at the Starlite Gala charity auction in Marbella, Spain.

His artistic journey has also led to private commissions, including two portraits created for legendary opera singer Plácido Domingo.

These experiences mark an important chapter in the continued development of StuRayArt, connecting his distinctive visual language with an international audience of collectors and art enthusiasts.
