MAO DAVID BOWIE

Mao by Raymond

Description & Inspiration

In Mao Bolt, Raymond fuses political history with pop-culture rebellion. The iconic portrait of Mao Zedong is reinterpreted through electrifying neon tones of red, yellow, and green – overlaid with David Bowie’s legendary lightning bolt. The result is a bold commentary on power, identity, and the transformation of symbols across generations.

Technique & Materials

Raymond’s Acrylic Pouring method combined with sharp color contrasts creates a striking, almost vibrating intensity. The flat neon palette and the iconic bolt across Mao’s face shift the figure from political propaganda to contemporary art, blending critique and celebration of pop iconography.

Impact & Meaning

By merging Mao’s portrait with Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust lightning bolt, the piece questions authority and the cult of personality. It explores how leaders and cultural icons become larger-than-life symbols – sometimes feared, sometimes admired, but always powerful.
